Mental illness can affect anyone, of any age, culture, income, sexuality and gender. Improving attitudes and understanding among the New Zealand general public, to reduce the discrimination of mental illness, is essential.
A recent New Zealand Mental Health Survey (Te Rau Hinengaro, September 2006) has found that mental disorder is common in New Zealand: 46.6% of the population are predicted to meet criteria for a disorder at some time in their lives, with 39.5% having already done so and 20.7% having a disorder in the past 12 months.
Seeking support early on when experiencing distress gives you the potential to decrease the symptoms. Talking to family, friends or people you trust and finding out about your mental health problem, treatments and rights can all result in you taking back control in your life quicker.
Most people with mental health problems get their treatment and support from primary health services (i.e. GP’s, Practice Nurses, counselors, psychotherapists, and community support groups). People with more complex mental health problems are often referred by their GP to specialist mental health services.
One of the current Mental Health projects run by HealthWEST PHO and Waitemata DHB Mental Health Services focuses on enabling individuals with significant mental health to gain access back to GP care for ongoing, regular follow up. Training on mental health issues has been made available to GP’s and other practice staff.
We encourage people to seek support for their problems at the earliest possible time. This in the hope of preventing distress and suffering and to prevent problems becoming more severe. Knowing that physical and mental health issues are often intertwined we encourage individuals to see their GP’s for regular screening.
Vidya Venugopalan works for HealthWEST PHO as Project Leader Primary Care Mental Health. The aim is that projects being set up will result in better linkages between GP practices and other providers so that people seeking services will receive a more integrated approach. Improving mental health, wellbeing and addiction prevention is in everybody’s interest.
